What is the registration process for the MMCD CCA Exam?

Pay the examination fee when you register for the CA Course

When you register online for your CA course, select the option that reads "+ exam".

Submit your student profile & examination references 2 weeks before the CA Course start date

You must submit both your student profile (download here) AND written references to the MMCDA office two weeks prior to the first day of your contract administration course, so we can consider your qualifications for writing the exam once you complete the course.

Your student profile is a fillable PDF form that must be completed electronically, and saved on your computer. Please do not print the form and complete it by hand; difficulty reading illegible writing will delay processing your request.

Your references must follow the below guidelines. Note that failure to submit this documentation will result in ineligibility to write the exam.

Your references (minimum of three) must provide a letter outlining the project name, project value, date of project, description of applicant's role in the project, a brief description of the project, and the contact information for the reference (phone number and email).

References should be in Word or PDF format on company letterhead.

Please collect all of your references and submit them all at one time to the office by email, with the subject line worded as follows: "Your Student Name Here (First & Last Name): References for CA Examination".

3. Wait for the office to confirm of your approval to write the examination

The MMCD Association office will forward your references to the Board of Directors for review.

4. Submit your Proctor Qualification Form

When you have been approved for the examination, the office will send you a Proctor Qualification Form. If you do not receive this form with your notice of approval to write, please contact admin@mmcd.net and request one. The Proctor Qualification Form is a fillable PDF that must be completed electronically and returned to the MMCD Association office as an attachment to an email. Please do not print the form and complete it by hand as this will delay processing your request.

5. Await receipt of your examination

Our office will send your examination package directly to your Proctor.

"Quality Assurance and Quality Control Testing" video - Contract Consideration Series

(15m) There is a certain amount of confusion shown in forum and class questions about the difference between Quality Assurance and Quality Control. Brian Weeks brings some clarity to this topic as well as discussing testing and retesting options.

Part of the confusion comes from the difference between how other contracts handle these two types of testing compared to the MMCD. Other contracts often have the Owner engage and pay one or more testing firms to do Q/A. These firms work concurrently with the Contractor, but report directly to the Owner. As Brian will discuss, the MMCD handles testing differently, with the Contract Administrator (or CA for short) receiving Q/A test reports from the Contractor and reporting back to the Owner.

Under the MMCD, the Owner specifies tests to be done for its own reassurance that the work is meeting the contractually required standards. These tests are part of the Contract requirements and the Contractor is obliged to perform them, or arrange for them to be performed during the course of the work.

Question 4

Do Consultants and Project Owners have to be MMCD Association members to use the MMCD documents?

The documents can be used by the purchaser, Owner or Consultant, without membership in our association. They can also access the FAQs and view the construction administration videos "Contract Considerations” without being members. However, MMCD Association members do score some great discounts (50%) on specialized training for Contract Administrators, Inspectors, Superintendents and Foremen!

Is it mandatory that the Contract Administrator be certified through MMCD Association?

[Organization] has requested and received RFPs for three water main replacement projects. When reviewing the proposals the question has arisen, “If the construction tenders will be based on the MMCD Documents and the Owner is relying on the Engineering Consultant to provide the Contract Administrator, does the Contract Administrator require to be Certified through the MMCD process?”

COMMENT:

Contract Administrators do not have to be certified to perform their role. However, it helps to have taken the CCA course and written the exam, because the CA is in a unique position. Potential CAs might be asked about their familiarity with GC3.3, Contract Administration, and their level of comfort with the duties required.

How much does the Contract Administration Exam cost? Is there a member price?

The Certified Contract Administrator Exam is $100 + GST, regardless of your membership type or status.

I failed the CCA exam. Can I write it again?

It is our policy that if you fail the CCA exam, you can retake the Contract Administration Course and rewrite the exam once at no cost.

You have two years from the date of your last exam sitting to rewrite.

Question 8

I want to take the Contract Administration Course, but it is not being held in my area. What can I do?

MMCD conducts surveys on the highest demand locations for holding the Contract Administrator Course; we use this information to determine where to hold the courses.

If you would like a Contract Administrator Course held in your area, we will make an effort to accommodate your request. Please note that a minimum of 15 students is required to consider these requests.

Question 9

What is the passing grade for the CCA Exam?

The passing grade is 75%. Candidates who pass the exam and who satisfy all the other criteria will receive a certificate from MMCD Association.

Candidates who do not achieve a 75% grade will be so advised and given suggestions for areas of remedial study. These candidtates are eligible to attend another Certified Contract Administrator course and/or to rewrite the examination within two years.

What pre-qualifications are required to write the Certified Contract Administration Exam?

To ensure Certified Contract Administrators (C Admin) have practical experience, not just academic qualifications, the MMCD Association has set the following criteria for those wishing to write the Certified Contract Admininstrators examination:

P.Eng., EIT or AScT registration or a minimum of 5 years of relevant field construction experience
Documented field administrative experience and duties at least three projects using MMCD documents with a construction value of $500,000 or more
References (sent directly to MMCD Association) to verify responsibility and duties from:

An owner's representative supervising the candidate's duties on one or more MMCD projects;
A contractor's representative who worked with the candidate on one or more MMCD contracts;
Current employer's verification of contract management duties and assignment.

Candidate credentials will be verified prior to the examination and those who meet the criteria will be advised and placed on the eligibility list.
